The River 2 lists at $209 and the River 3 Plus at $299, a gap of $90. Per watt-hour that is about $0.86 against $1.05, so the River 2 is the cheaper way to buy raw capacity. EcoFlow's French and Dutch stores list the two at EUR 199 and EUR 299, the same shape of gap. The $90 does not buy much extra battery: the River 3 Plus holds 286Wh against the River 2's 243Wh (Amazon lists the River 2 at 256Wh). What it buys is output, solar input and expandability, covered below. If capacity per dollar is the only thing you are comparing, the River 2 wins.
EcoFlow River 3 Plus vs River 2 (2026)
The EcoFlow River 3 Plus wins for most people. River 3 Plus vs River 2 compared on price, output, solar and weight, and when the River 2 is enough.
Heads up: some links here pay us. If you buy through an EcoFlow or eufy link we may earn a commission, at no cost to you (that's Awin, in some countries). Amazon and other shop links pay us nothing right now. I haven't tested these products myself unless the page says so; the picks come from the specs and listings, and I'll tell you when I'm not sure. EcoFlow River 3 Plus wins overall
Price and Value
Output and What It Runs
This is where the two separate. The River 2 delivers 300W continuous with a 600W X-Boost mode. The River 3 Plus delivers 600W continuous and EcoFlow rates its X-Boost at 1200W for heating devices. In practice 300W covers a CPAP machine, a modem and router, a laptop and phone chargers. 600W adds a monitor and desktop, a larger fridge or a small TV setup, and X-Boost reaches into small heaters and hot plates. A 1500W kettle is out of range for both. The River 3 Plus also switches over in under 10 ms, which EcoFlow positions as a UPS for a desktop or router.
Capacity and Expansion
The River 3 Plus holds 286Wh and the River 2 holds 243Wh by EcoFlow's spec sheet. That is an 18% gap, which will not change runtime on a light load by much. The difference is what comes later. The River 3 Plus accepts the EB300 (286Wh) or EB600 (572Wh) extra battery, stacking to 858Wh, and the EB300 lists at $159 on EcoFlow's US store. EcoFlow lists no extra battery for the River 2, so what you buy is what you keep.
Charging and Solar
From the wall the two are level: both recharge from empty in about an hour. The gap is solar. The River 2 accepts up to 110W from panels, the River 3 Plus up to 220W, and EcoFlow quotes a full charge in as fast as 1.5 hours with enough panel. For a camp, a van or an outage that lasts days, double the solar input is the difference between topping up during the day and falling behind. It does not matter if you only ever charge from the wall.
Size, Weight and Noise
The River 2 weighs 7.7 lb and the River 3 Plus 10.4 lb, so the newer unit is about 35% heavier. Both are small enough for a shelf, a closet or a backpack-sized bag, and the River 3 Plus is rated under 30 dB in use. If the unit goes in a go-bag, on a hike to a campsite, or up a flight of stairs regularly, the extra 2.7 pounds is real. If it sits in a closet until the lights go out, it is not.
Buy the River 3 Plus if there is any chance you will run something bigger than a CPAP and a router. Output doubles, solar input doubles, the battery can grow, and it doubles as a UPS, all for $90 more. Buy the River 2 if your loads are small and fixed, because 300W covers a CPAP, a modem, a phone and a laptop with room to spare, it weighs 2.7 pounds less, and it costs 30% less. The River 3 Plus is the better machine. The River 2 is often the better purchase, and that depends entirely on what you plan to plug in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes if you will run anything above 300W, charge from solar, or want room to expand later. It doubles continuous output to 600W, doubles solar input to 220W, and accepts an extra battery up to 858Wh. If your loads are a CPAP machine, a router and a phone, you are paying for headroom you will not use and the River 2 is the better buy.
Yes. A CPAP machine draws far less than the River 2's 300W output, and our CPAP backup guide picks the River 2 for that job. Runtime depends on your machine and whether you use a heated humidifier, so check your machine's wattage before you rely on a number.
EcoFlow rates its switchover at under 10 ms and sells it for desktops, routers and NAS drives, with an alert when the battery runs low. That is fast enough for most computers, but check your own equipment's tolerance before depending on it for anything critical.
Only to the River 3 Plus. It takes the EB300 (286Wh) or EB600 (572Wh) extra battery, up to 858Wh in total. EcoFlow lists no extra battery for the River 2, so choose the capacity you need when you buy it.
Yes. EcoFlow's French and Dutch stores list the River 2 at EUR 199 and the River 3 Plus at EUR 299. Check that you are on the plain River 3 Plus: the French store also sells a "sans fil" bundle with a power bank at EUR 679, which is a different product.
